For too long, the story of Bognor Regis has been written for us, rather than by us.

We have been told a story of rigid boundaries, institutional distance, and a system that treats residents as passive consumers of public services rather than active authors of their own town. When our local institutions close their gates, silence community-led ideas, and retreat into administrative silos, public trust naturally erodes. The recent, deeply concerning institutional failures across West Sussex have only highlighted what many of us already feel: the old way of doing things is no longer fit for purpose.

But an old, broken story cannot be defeated simply by complaining about it. It can only be replaced by a powerful, irresistible new story.

Today, we are launching that new story—a Metanarrative of Restoration for Bognor Regis.

Moving From Alienation to Belonging

This is not a story about lines on a council map or bureaucratic red tape. This is a story about belonging.

We believe that true local governance doesn't happen from the top down behind closed doors; it happens from the neighborhood up. When power is distributed back to the community, and when local people have real agency over their own spaces, data, and culture, something extraordinary happens. 

Cynicism fades, and shared purpose takes its place.

We are shifting Bognor Regis out of the old story of decline and division, and moving into a restorative new era built on two clear foundations:

• Thick, Trusted Local Networks: Through practical, hyper-local hubs like The 381 Club, we are mending the fabric of our community. We are building deep, relational trust at the neighborhood level—creating spaces where people are heard, valued, and connected.

• Community-Led Innovation: Through vehicles like Creative Bognor, we are proving that our community possesses the independent data, the creative imagination, and the strategic foresight to shape our own economic and cultural future. 

• Projects like our proposed Shoreline Club demonstrate how we can breathe fresh life into our rich local heritage from the ground up, without waiting for permission from a distant committee.

A Vision Aligned with a Changing World

The tide is turning. Globally and nationally, the political and social narrative is shifting away from rigid, defensive bureaucracies and moving toward regional empowerment, devolution, and community asset ownership. The national focus is increasingly championing the exact model of bottom-up, neighborhood-first resilience that we are pioneering right here.

We are not shouting from the sidelines. We are standing on the high ground, offering a constructive, transparent, and collaborative alternative. We are here to help rebuild the broken foundation of trust across all elements of local governance.
